April Showers: An Observer’s View

April Showers: An Observer’s View

By Dan McClure

During one day of filming “April Showers” at Plattsmouth High School, dark, ominous clouds rolled in and overtook the set. Severe weather descended upon the cast and crew, with it a Midwest staple; a tornado.   People scrambled for safety as the crew tried to preserve props and camera equipment. It was a surreal sight considering that scenes being shot at the school included students running scared as they reenacted the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School. I tried to imagine the horror of that day but was unable to do so. After the storm subsided, a beautiful rainbow graced the sky. Andrew Robinson at that time took the opportunity to give a very heartwarming gesture of gratitude to everyone working on the film.  It was a very touching moment.

Throughout the process of making the film and in the months that followed it seemed that both the film and the website portrayed a similar theme of dark, tragic storm followed by beautiful colored rainbows. It was the message of hope, perseverance, and goodness coming from situations of tragedy and darkness. It taught us the fact that no matter how horrific an act at the hands of others people of good will find a way to overcome and grow in spirit. Many bright rainbows have and continue to spring forth from the Columbine storm as portrayed in “April Showers.”

Which brings us to today and the next chapter of this ever-growing experience we’ve all come to know as “April Showers.” As some of you may or may not know, I’ve been a regular here on the site, sharing my two cents along the way about the many topics and ideas Andrew has shared. It seems my musings didn’t go unnoticed, for Andrew has graciously asked me to write for the site. While I’m not completely sure what he has in store for me, I’m excited about the opportunity and look forward to sharing my thoughts with all of you.

Sincerely,
Dan McClure
